Méribel loves live music, so if you’re someone who prefers live bands over some spinning DJ decks, there will be plenty of après-parties that you’ll love in this resort. Here are our favourite places that offer up the best of Méribel après-ski.
Start your evening in style at Barometer, a relaxed bar with good music and great drinks. The Mutzig Old Lager is a particularly powerful stuff, so stick to the wine, or switch to the water if you’re starting to feel it. TV screens are switched on only for the big games and the place is open from 2pm to 2am.
The Doron Pub
A super lively venue, with great live music and a happy hour always just around the corner; make sure you visit the Doron Pub. Also just called ‘the Pub’, it’s super popular and opens up around 4pm on weekdays and 1:30pm on weekends, kicking things off with some good snowboarding and skiing TV. Have a game of pool and relax in the afternoon, but be prepared for things to get a bit hectic once the evening sets in. The chilled vibe is quickly replaced with some pretty raucous behaviour and either a live band or DJ pumps out good music well past midnight. There aren’t many themed events, but when the Doron Pub puts one on, they do a damn good job of it, so keep your ears to the ground when you’re out there. Doors close around 1am.
Offering up a different vibe, Evolution is the place to slink off to when you want to take things down a notch. The mood is relaxed and a little quieter. Breakfast starts at 8am so you can begin your day with Arabica coffee, a homemade smoothie, or milkshake. When the afternoon rolls around, try the vin chaud or have a cocktail. Grab a board game or glaze over and let the Sky TV morph you into a couch potato for a couple of hours.
La Folie Douce
A fabulous party venue, La Folie Douce can be found in several of France’s top resorts. With a name that literally translates as some form of madness, La Folie Douce never fails to live up to expectations. There is always dancing on tables, fabulous food, a good flow of alcohol and jazzy-dance music to boot.
This sports bar is a super popular little place. Find it close the Chaudanne lift, and duck in to enjoy anything from a cheeky beer to a full-on themed party. The team are a colourful bunch of boarders and skiers who bring a great vibe to the bar. The big screens draw a good sized crowd who enjoy the sports and there are also comedy nights featuring some pretty good comedians. Doors open around 11am but the evening kicks off around 5pm. The place usually closes around 2am.
For Euro-pop that keeps the party flowing, the Loft is the club to head to. The music is absolutely booming and most people are cutting shapes on the dance floor well into the night. Need to recharge your batteries for a minute? Grab a booth for some dancing respite. Doors open at 9pm.
For a party that will last well into the early hours of the morning, head to O’Sullivans. This venue has been revamped in recent years and everything from the bar to the beer has seen an upgrade. DJs or live music keep the party in full swing and this place often attracts a large crowd every day of the week. We particularly like that there is a pizza restaurant that serves food upstairs until 1am.
Aux Petits Oignons
More a restaurant than a bar, but still a great place to start off your pre-drinks with some great home cooked food, add Aux Petits Oignons to your ‘places to visit’ list. The staff are notoriously friendly and welcoming and there are some great wines and beers to get your evening started. Doors open everyday for lunch from 12pm to 2pm. Dinner service starts at 7pm and the last guests will have to leave at 1am when it closes.
A sophisticated bar, in fact perhaps the most sophisticated of all Méribel après-ski venues, La Poste delivers a difference experience as compared to the usual musical thrashings of the local bars. Not one to shy away from a happy hour, La Poste offers 2-for-1 cocktail deals and theirs are a far cry from some of the mixer-heavy concoctions you’ll encounter at other venues. You’ll be able to sample some fabulous international beers, great wines, and Champagnes whilst you’re there.
Le Rond Point
Find Le Rond Point at the Rond Point des Pistes, just above Méribel centre, below the Rhodos lift. An iconic venue in the Méribel après-ski scene, there’s a vibrant terrace that is lit up by the sun every afternoon and blasts out live music. Le Rond Point has made a bit of a name for itself; known for its mad parties and happy hour. Keep your ski boots on at the Ronnie, as its affectionately called. Share a bottle of their toffee vodka, which is simply divine, and dance on through until closing at 7pm.
Another great location is Scott’s, a bar with 2-for-1 cocktails and happy hour deals happening on and off throughout the evening. Have a good boogie and sink into one of the plush sofas in between tunes.
This venue is the sister bar to Dick’s Tea Bar with a cracking happy hour and great music. Head over from 8pm to pick up a jug of Amstel for as little as €15. The place can get pretty rammed and there’s live music every Thursday from around 10pm. A large screen projector delivers the latest sports games and DJs turn up the volume every Wednesday and Sunday. Doors open from 7:30am and breakfast, lunch, and dinner is always in service. There’s also a cyber internet cafe which beams out brilliant wifi.
If you want to be that little bit extra and woo your mates, or fancy treating your girlfriend, jump into a gondola for your après-ski. Gorge yourself on fondue and wine as you ascend over the pistes. The views are stunning and it’s certainly not something you do every day. On that note, be aware that this only takes place on a couple of dates, so check out the website to see when you can do it next. Expect prices at around €79 per person. This price includes an apertif at 7:30pm, followed by dinner from 8pm to 10:30pm and an intimate after party with desert and drinks once you’ve finished with the gondola tour.
